Malcolm x
Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. Early in Malcolm’s life he and his family faced segregation. Their home in Lansing, Michigan was burnt down and two years after that his father was found dead. The family believed that the Black Legion were responsible for his father’s death. Malcolm was a bright student and enjoyed school very much. Malcolm hoped to become a lawyer one day. However one of Malcolm’s teachers had told him he would not be eligible to get a job like that because of his race. This comment strongly impacted Malcolm. Malcolm dropped out of school and got caught up in narcotics and other illegal activities. Malcolm was arrested in 1946 with a friend of his. They were convicted on burglary charges. Malcolm was sentenced ten years in prison. It was in prison Malcolm decided to further his education while he was in prison. While in prison Malcolm joined the Nation of Islam. Malcolm had developed a philosophy of black superiority and separatism from whites. In his later years Malcolm strongly urged African Americans to take control of their livelihoods, communities, and culture.
