Voting rights act of 1965
This Voting Rights Act of 1965 eliminated the literacy tests that had disqualified many voters in the United States. This act stated that federal examiners could enroll voters who had been denied suffrage by local officials. The proportion of African Americans began to rise slowly as more and more African Americans became registered to vote. This act allowed uneducated African Americans the chance to vote without having to take the literary test which had stopped many before.
